what is ferpa?
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act or FERPA is a Federal law passed in 1974 that protects students’ private educational records from unauthorized parties. As a new teacher it’s important for me to know and understand FERPA rules and guidelines. I must be careful of the way I handle student’s information, especially in the classroom and on the internet. A teacher in Austin resigned because she violated FERPA by posting pictures of her 1st grade class along with student’s private information on a public site (https://privacyassociation.org/news/a/2010-09-27-teacher-resigns-after-ferpa-violation/). I must be careful and never post or reveal students private information and educational records to any unauthorized parties for it could cost me my job.
