Portfolio's are great alternative assessments to show student's improvement, abilities and skills. Having students create an online portfolio is a great way for students to see how much they have grown. It's encouraging to see improvement in your own work and I believe that it would also allow for students to take responsibility for their own learning. It is also something they can keep and add on as the years go by and maybe even summit for college admission. I would use e-portfolios in my classroom as a formative assessment and summative assessment. Periodically I will check students e-portfolio's for updates, give it a pass or fail and and appropriate feedback. Towards the end of the year, I will give a letter grade for the e-portfolio. I would provide lots of guidance at the beginning of the school year but gradually let the students manage the e-portfolio by themselves.
