homework
Will you be assigning homework? If so, how much do you think is appropriate?
There is a lot of debate right now whether homework is necessary or not. As for myself, I believe I will assign homework in my classroom. I think that homework is an important part of learning as a tool of revision. What I mean is that homework should only be about reviewing what has already been covered in class. I also think that homework should not be a task that takes hours for students to complete at home. Homework should be short and meaningful. By that I mean, that as teachers we need to assign homework that makes a contribution to students mastering the objective. I don't think its fair to give students busy work. I also don't think that homework needs to be given everyday, only when it will enhance student learning.
Do you have a plan to handle differences in family resources?
I have read that homework can hinder students from poor families that might have parent that can be involve in helping their homework or lack the resources that other better off families have. It is a difficult situation to deal with as a teacher. What I might do is provide time after school (like and hour or so) were student can do their homework in the classroom if they so wish. I can provide computer assess and help when needed. I also think I might not grade all the homework assigned as well as give plenty of homework that would not require a computer.
What relationships do you see between homework and tracking/ability grouping?
The relationship that I see between homework and tracking/ability grouping is that students with better resources will do better then does that don't have the resources. It comes down to the socioeconomic level all over again. As a future educator I need to be conscious of that and do my best to give all my students a chance to succeed no matter their family situation.
