Assessment Processes
1. Identify three ways teachers use informal assessments with specific examples and what they could do with the information.
There are many ways teachers use informal assessment. One can be student interviews, where a teacher sits down with students individually and talks about what the student has learned so far. The teacher should have specific questions for each student and let the students know the purpose for the interview, which is assessment. This information can be used to differentiate instruction and also help the teacher create relevance in the next section with the students.
Another way to use informal assessment is teacher observations. For example, a teacher can use check list as a formative assessment during a unit or lesson. This type of monitoring can help the teacher know if students are mastering the skill and if there is a need to reteach.
A third type of informal assessment can be portfolios. A portfolio needs to be well planned out and show student work, test, projects, and grades. This type of portfolio can be used to show students, parents, and other teachers how the student has progressed.
2. Tell 2 ways you will use daily writing as a form of assessment in your teaching practice.
Two ways I would like to use in my teaching practice are journals and minute papers. I would like to use journals for students to take notes and do practice problems. I would pick up the journals periodically to give a pass or fail grade. I would also like students to check each others journals for two proposes. One, to check for wrong information and two, to check their own understanding of the skill or subject. I would use the minute paper to check for understanding and to see if there is anything the students do not get. I actually would not grade this, but require it for students to leave the classroom. I would use the minute papers to see if there is anything I need to reteach the next class period.
